Sony Handycam movie files needed for school- How do I get them onto the computer?

I've borrowed a Sony Handycam and I need to transfer the video files to my computer for editing. This isn't my camera, so all I have is a USB cable. I've tried plugging it into the camera and computer and turning the camera on. The computer doesn't recognize the software. :( What do I need to do to get the files onto my computer?
